Asus Memo Pad HD 7 (Quad-core Processor 1.2GHz; 7-inch display)
TAIPEI, Taiwan--Tablets have just reached a whole new level of affordability with Asus Memo Pad HD 7. Announced at Computex,
this 7-inch slate will retail for only US$129 with 8GB onboard storage,
while the 16GB version will cost US$149. This pricing is notably lower
than the 16GB Google Nexus 7 (also made by Asus), which is currently priced at US$199. (Credit: Asus)
Despite the low-cost proposition, the Memo Pad HD 7 is no slouch and
comes with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor that should keep the machine
responsive. Meanwhile, the 7-inch display has a 1,280 x 800 resolution
and uses In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology. This ensures both
HD-compatibility and a wider viewing angle. While the features sound
good so far, there are some tradeoffs, obviously. (Credit: Philip Wong/CNET)
The Memo Pad HD 7 has a full plastic body and comes with a two-color
finish--a piano-black bezel and a colored rear cover. Surprisingly, the
overall build quality is acceptable without feeling too plasticky or
flimsy. The 7-inch slate comes with a 1.2-megapixel camera in front and a
5-megapixel one on the rear.
Like other Asus Android tablets, the Memo Pad HD 7 uses only software
keys (meaning no physical buttons for the menu and back functions),
though some users may prefer to have a physical button similar to
Samsung's tablets.
Located on the left side of the tablet are the power button and
volume rocker, while a microSD card slot is available on the right.
Additional connectivity options include a micro-USB port and a 3.5mm
earphone jack. Lastly, the speakers are placed at the bottom.
An Asus representative told CNET Asia that Wi-Fi Direct is supported,
which will allow you to transfer files to other supported devices
faster than with a Bluetooth connection. (Credit: Philip Wong/CNET)
The hot pink, blue, light green and dark gray sleeves shown below are
called TransCover sleeves. One side of the sleeve is covered in
microfiber which can be used to protect and clean the Memo Pad and while
the entire sleeve can be folded into a stand. Flipping opening the lid
will switch on the tablet automatically, while closing it will put the
device on standby, similar to the iPad Smart Cover. Also on display is
what Asus calls the Persona Cover and it's made of a hardened but
flexible polymer with a non-slip finish. (Credit: Philip Wong/CNET)
The Asus Memo Pad HD 7 is hard to beat in terms of value, especially
for those with a tight budget. You can expect this 7-inch tablet to be
launched globally anytime within the third quarter of this year.
